Advanced Placement Art student, Armando Cobian shares his experiences contributing as a photojournalist for WYCC-PBS.
"It's really cool to be able to say I contribute to a well-known news station in Chicago. Thanks to WYCC – PBS, I am able to begin living my dream.
With that being said, I want to start talking about the problems that come with being a photojournalist.
Sometimes, working in 2° weather isn't so much fun, but I have no choice. I do it, or I don't. Also, some people are uncomfortable with cameras being pointed at them. That can cause issues that I have to deal with. I'm not always in the coolest places, and I don't always agree with the people I'm covering. Regardless, I have to document what is going on. My opinion holds no value in photojournalism. Sometimes that's hard to work with, but my stories are to be kept as factual and as real as possible.
But I love it.
I love the people I get to talk to. I never know what kind of awesome people I'll stumble upon. I love the energy created in large groups, and challenge of photographing them. I love the memories I create, the experiences I have, and the moments I will live through and document.
So in short, my job is to meet with great people, and tell their story (no matter what challenge comes my way) for it to be distributed through WYCC – PBS."
